Item Description
5x8.25" w/"Joliet, IL 7" union bug. Affixed to backing paper at center w/small piece of two sided tape. Margin wear including short tears and overall moderate handling. Fine. Both Atty. Clarence Darrow and Professor T. V. Smith of the University of Chicago toured the country as lecturers and debated social causes for nearly a decade. Darrow was a noted trial attorney and lecturer, notably debating the evolution of man against William Jennings Bryan in the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925. Professor Smith lead a colorful life in academia, military and political endeavors including holding a seat in Congress from Illinois 1939-1941. This particular debate posed the question "Is The Individual Responsible For His Conduct." The transcript of the debate was published in a paperback form by Handman-Julius Publications, Girard, Kansas as part of their "Little Blue Book " series. This publisher is noted for supporting social causes of the day.
