8x10". Dated July 6, 1853. Jefferson Davis, the future President of the Confederate States of America, served as Sec. of War in Franklin Pierce's cabinet. Manuscript letter to former New Hampshire Governor John H. Steele at Peterborough, N. H. Text includes "I Have The Honor To Enclose, Here By A Copy Of An Order Constituting A Commission Of Which You Are Appointed A Member, To Make Certain Inquiries, Therein Particularly Mentioned, Respecting The Superintendence Of The National Armories. Your Compensation Will Be Eight Dollars Per Day For The Time Actually Employed On The Duties Of The Commission, With An Allowance Of Ten Cents Per Mile For All Necessary Travel." Letter written in Davis' hand and signed in black dip pen ink at conclusion "Jefferson Davis Secretary Of War". Typical mailing folds otherwise only minor handling. Exc. Supremely preserved w/bold signature. Included w/this letter is a manuscript draft copy "War Department, Washington, July 7, 1853" of the official order establishing the commission. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
