Item Description
2" dia. by 1/8" thick heavy brass medal with tiny text naming maker "A.E. CO. Utica, N.Y.". Reverse shows USA continent with border of ocean waves inscribed left and right "Pacific/Atlantic". Front rim has text quoted in our title plus engraved center panel "Awarded To/Fred Santini". Apparently he was one of the 15 riders, who each received a medal, for participating in this much publicized ride from Los Angeles to New York which began August 19, 1934 to revive a sporting event that took the USA by storm in 1896 when a similar relay accomplished the journey in 13-1/2 days. This 1934 group reduced the record to 7 days. Very minor luster wear. Rare. Exc.
