Item Description
2" all celluloid case with top that wraps around in a single piece to form a rim that holds the glass mirror. There is no metal collet on the underside. The celluloid curl carries the company name and patent date Nov, 2, 1897. This represents W&H's earliest version of an advertising pocket mirror - in this instance with the entire case made of celluloid, not simply the transparent thin layer of celluloid covering a printed paper that became the standard form by the turn of the century in 1900. Mirror missing sliver of silvering along one edge but 97% intact otherwise. All these printing on solid celluloid mirrors are rare and being farm machinery makes this one very desirable. Tiny wear to black text near outer edge. Edge at 1 o'clock has barely seem .25" scratch. Exc. First seen. Alan Weinberg Collection. See pre-1900 lot of three mirrors #586.
