Item Description
1", no maker, real photo button w/tiny 1/8" cello split along the collet. Jack Johnson's championship did not lead to opportunity for future black boxers but rather they were rarely able to contract for championship fights. In 1926, Harry Wills was supposed to fight Jack Dempsey in New York, but the promoter sacrificed $50K and Dempsey took on Tunney in Philadelphia; partly to synch with the Sesquicentennial Expo but also because Dempsey faced breach of contract litigation in NY for not fighting Wills. Wills never got a title shot, but was Black Heavyweight Champ three times. Only one known to us. Front cello is Exc. Paul Muchinsky Collection Book Example #103.
