Item Description
13/16" silvered brass token. Obverse has fighters facing off and "Nelson-Gans/Sep 3. 1906". Reverse "The Del Monte/Goldfield /Kapp & Revere". Gans took the Lightweight Champion title in 1902, the first African-American World Boxing Champion of the 20th century. In this fight, despite a broken hand in Round 33, Gans survived to win in the 42nd round when Nelson was disqualified after a low blow. Some 15,000 stormed the sleepy Goldfield, NV town, including Jack London. Light wear. Fine. Rare. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
