Item Description
1" w/ St. Louis Button Co. back paper. While most of organized labor supported FDR, the CIO, under the leadership of John L. Lewis, endorsed Wendell Willkie. In a speech to his union prior to the election, Lewis stated that if FDR was re-elected, he would consider it a vote of no-confidence for his own leadership of the CIO, and holding true to his word, Lewis resigned after Roosevelt's re-election. Only minor surface wear. NM. An unusual piece of political and labor history highlighting the tension between Lewis and Roosevelt during this period.
