Item Description
5" tall w/concave metal back and easel. Curl has "Underwood & Underwood" portrait credit at 6 o'clock. Superb contrast and clarity with candidate's full name at right. Scattered and trivial hairline scratches only seen in reflected light. NM. Davis had served as Solicitor Gen. under Woodrow Wilson and in the US House representing West Virginia from 1911-1913. His career as a lawyer would conclude in 1955 having argued 140 cases before the US Supreme Court. But in 1924 he was the dark horse 'favorite son' candidate of West Virginia entering the Democratic convention and went on to win the nomination on the 103rd ballot, during the longest continuously running political convention in American history. Due to the nature of his nomination and the dismal prospect of the Democratic Party in the 1924 election cycle, not much material was produced for his campaign, making interesting artifacts featuring Davis among the most elusive for any candidate of the 20th century. This oval is the only example extant and has been among the crown jewels of a major collection for over 25 years. It is easily the most impressive Davis artifact we have offered in our 55 years. An important opportunity to obtain a 1924 trophy that will be a centerpiece in even the most advanced collections.
