Item Description
19x25.5" copperplate printed on cotton. Listed in Collins Threads of History as plate 54 on p. 71. Printed and published in Scotland, Glasgow by C. Gary in 1819. Standing portrait was sourced from a 1798 engraving by Tiebout after drawings by Charles Buxton, and Gilbert Stuart. Framed behind Washington is the Kennedy house, where he lived during the early days of the revolution and the fort at Bowling Green. GW is depicted standing atop the pedestal at Bowling Green where a statue of King George III was famously toppled by Washington's troops and members of the Sons of Liberty on July 9, 1776. He is flanked by obelisks dedicated to the "Soldiers" and "Sailors" of the Revolutionary War. At top is text of a long tribute including "He Was First In Peace, First In The Hearts Of The Americans." Red ink stamp neatly applied at bottom right reading "Mastai Collection." Tiny hole right of center at the extreme lower edge of design. Reverse has nine tiny acid free fabric tape repairs stabilizing scattered pin holes. Otherwise, light even age toning and handling. VF. A superb example among the finest extant. An impressive display piece that will frame magnificently.
