Item Description
Large and striking in official expo colors, this 1.75" is without maker's name. It is one of the few expo souvenirs to reference George Washington, whose 1789 inauguration anniversary after all was the supposed inspiration to plan and dedicate the 1939-40 NYWF. The Fair actually opened a year before this button on April 30, 1939, the 150th inauguration anniversary to the day. FDR did the honors with his opening speech televised over experimental station W2XBS (now WNBC). Finally getting some due on this 1940 button, Washington the father of our country faces the future symbolized by the Trylon & Perisphere. Lower right side of Trylon has a whitish printing defect line- very minor and all else is NM. Rare. See rare early NBC and early television lots #631-632.
