Item Description
First is 7/8" and it could be the first boxing pin-back button made as it holds a Whitehead & Hoag (W&H) paper back used in this size button and introduced in the latter months of 1896 (year the celluloid covered button was invented by W&H) with continued use until sometime in 1898. Muchinsky in his Boxing Pinbacks Book  (this the item #51 plate example) suggested this button might relate to the Johnson-Jeffries fight but that is not possible given this early back paper. If it has anything to do with a specific boxer we think that would be Sullivan or Corbett. Beneath "Don't Get In The Way Of This" is arm with clenched fist. Very faint age tone on far left edge. Full gloss. One seen. Second is well detailed on front (back is flat) 1.25" boxer in trunks and gloves. His hair is depicted combed in the style of Sullivan (but no hint of a moustache) or Corbett. Trace of silver luster still on the trunks but rest evaporated over time, VF. First seen. Both from Paul Muchinsky Collection and the pin-back is the Book Example.
