Item Description
7/8" with W&H back paper known used only 1896-1898, but this button dates to 1897 (likely pre-June) as it appears in the Whitehead & Hoag Catalog 37 which lists button sets "For Collectors" with this being part of the "Athletes" set consisting of six cyclists and seven "General Athletes" which included boxers Corbett and Fitzsimmons. The set was also used as a give-away premium with those examples also having "American Pepsin Gum" on the W&H back paper. While this is from the Paul Muchinsky Collection it is not his photo example for item #1 because that example has obvious stains as book photo shows. This is his upgrade and is NM.
