Item Description
3.5x5.5". Cast iron. Featuring the iconic image of a kneeling slave by abolitionist Josiah Wedgewood for the Society For The Abolition Of Slavery in 1787. This box could have been produced as early as 1795 but is more likely to have been made c. 1810 to c. 1830. Another example we have encountered was attributed to Millfield Iron Works outside of Wolverhampton, England. Moderate surface wear and scattered pitting. Fine. Rare. With tobacco being a slave-grown product, this box is an ironic fundraising device for the Society.
