Item Description
2.25" litho w/"Supplied By J. Hugh Campbell Dallas Texas." In 1941 Congressman Johnson entered the Democratic Primary for the US Senate seat campaigning heavily on his embrace of New Deal policies and issuing this button. While Johnson lost the primary in a nail biter, his star was only temporarily diminished and the rest is history. Scattered dots of oxidation some affecting portraits and an area of paint loss at 1 o'clock on extreme outer edge. Otherwise diagonal hairline scratches and typical fine crazing. VG. Given the extreme Texas climate these are often found w/extensive crazing and dark yellow toning. This specimen is a survivor that retains nice color and is not offensively toned. Speaking of LBJ, to his aide Harold Ickes, Roosevelt is said to have stated that "In The Next Generation, The Balance Of Power Will Shift South And West And This Boy Could Well Be The First Southern President Since The Civil War." This is the only coattail we can recall that features such heavy historical hitters together.
