Item Description
Large 23x32" single-sided slick paper sheet issued as a special insert for the New York Herald newspaper around Christmas 1905. Calendar features wonderful specialty art by 11 different artists. Comic strip characters dancing across top include - The Wish Twins by W.D. Wilson; a Dutch girl by Robert A. Graef; the Tiny Tads by Gustave Verbeck; Buster Brown and Tige by R.F. Outcault; Little Sammy Sneeze, Hungry Henrietta and Little Nemo by Winsor McCay; Happy Bear by R.F. Outcault; and a fantasy creature w/elephant's head by Walter Crane. Large center illustration by Otho Cushing features image of the Greek Goddess Athena about to be kissed by a cartoon version of the Owl of Athena, used as a symbol of knowledge, wisdom, perspicacity and erudition throughout the Western world. Calendar features four additional scenes to left and right, including top hat-clad Wall Street lambs running from bloody shears by political cartoonist W.A. Rogers; cheering crowd at football game by Wallace Morgan; pastoral scene w/Medieval lovers by E.V. Nádherny; busy 1906 street scene by L.A. Shafer. Each artwork bears facsimile signature/initials of their respective artist. Little Nemo had only been running in the Sunday comics a few months when this calendar was issued. Folded as issued, calendar has pin holes at corners and along margins (one w/small tear at top left), not offensive. Paper has lt. even aging. Fine/VF overall. Nicely illustrated "jam" piece by the New York Herald's top artists, only issued in the New York City area. Rare and just the second we've seen in our 55 years.
