Item Description
20x27" on 22x29" mount. Glazed cotton parade flag is unlisted in Hake and Threads of History. A most unusual star pattern with 34 larger stars accented with four smaller stars near center. The admission of the 38th state, Colorado, on Aug. 1, 1876 became official on July 4, 1877. This unusual pattern combined with the stylized text "Tilden And Hendricks" makes for an attractive folksy combination. Tack mounted at top right/left corner to white acid free matte board centered on a dark blue textured board. Edge loss at right affecting stars, two small holes and edge chipping along fly end. Vertical separation along left edge of canton stabilized with archival tape. Scattered small vertical and horizontal separations most notably at bottom right and left corners. Moisture marks and moderate even age toning throughout. Good. The only example known to us. Campaign flags are among the most highly coveted political artifacts and material from the 1876 election is notoriously difficult to source. See corresponding Hayes flag in previous lot.
