Item Description
18x27" on 22x29" mount. Glazed cotton parade flag w/text "For President R.B. Hayes For Vice President W.A. Weaver" emblazoned across four white stripes. Stars in canton are arranged in six justified rows of six stars each. Hake #3005. Collins was only able to document four flag designs combined for both 1876 candidates in his formative text Threads of History, listing the present offering as plate #463 on p. 215. Tack mounted at top right/left corner to abide free matte board. Older adhesive along left edge w/clear tape stabilization at top left corner. Horizontal separation through center of canton affecting the lower edge of the fourth line of stars from top. Chipping, small losses and scattered separations most notably along fly end at bottom right corner. Good. Campaign flags are among the most highly coveted political artifacts and material from the 1876 election is notoriously difficult to source with flags being among the most infrequently seen. This example is only the second known to us. Given its size, even patina and bold text it is an impressive specimen that will frame beautifully. See corresponding Tilden flag in following lot.
