Item Description
26.5x31" cotton. Stitched to a 32x37.5"museum mount. Unlisted in Collins Threads of History. This sizable example w/rich turkey red background and highly detailed portrait is a stunning 1848 campaign textile. Taylor's portrait is framed in holly leaves. Cartouche below portrait lists his military acumen at Palo Alto, Reseca Delapalma and Buena Vista with vignettes of battle scenes adorning the border at left, right and top center. For extreme accuracy we note a tiny light brown stain at bottom center in cream background. Otherwise only light handling. Exc. Size, condition and rarity make this among the most impressive Taylor artifacts we've encountered in our 55 years.

Contemporary reporting from 1846 after Taylor was promoted to Major General compared him to Andrew Jackson and George Washington. Despite this Taylor displayed little interest in climbing the political ladder once stating of the Presidency "Such An Idea Never Entered My Head, Nor Is It Likely To Enter The Head Of Any Sane Person." His victories during the Mexican American War propelled him into the national spotlight and while he was apolitical his views leaned towards that of the Whig Party who ultimately nominated him over Henry Clay and Winfield Scott. Nationally he defeated Lewis Cass ascending to the Presidency for a brief 16 months before stomach issues would take his life. Taylor material is infrequently offered, and we cannot find an example of this striking textile being offered in commerce. A special opportunity to obtain an important 1848 campaign display piece.
