Item Description
Trio of items range from 2.75x4.75 to 10.5x12x10". Period note reads "Veterans hat and funeral arm badge worn by Wm. Mills, a member of the 'Patriotic Defenders' at the funeral procession of president Zachary Taylor July 12, 1850". Later known as the Old Defenders, (Mr. Mills a member of 1st Artillery Regiment, Baltimore, MD Union Artillery) these men held Fort McHenry from British invasion during the battle that inspired The Star Spangled Banner. Beaver top hat w/black cockade and peacock feather plume. Metallic gold tassel, ribbon and eagle ornament. Accompanying black armband w/red, white and blue rosette and black tassels. Minor creases and consistent edge wear to hat. Armband w/loss to black wool on decorative rosette. Pin holes and expected toning to attached note. Fine. Taylor Memorial archive, Fine.
