Item Description
18x21" framed w/9x12.5" opening. Hand-colored lithograph by Currier & Ives, titled "Grand National Democratic Banner. Peace! Union! And Victory!" McClellan, the Commanding General of the U.S. Army in the early years of the war, was nominated in 1864 alongside George H. Pendleton. McClellan favored the continuation of the war but hoped for a restoration of the Union, albeit w/o the abolition of slavery. However, the official party position in the platform was an end to the war, a position shared by Pendleton, a Copperhead/Peace Democrat from Ohio. This made his campaign inconsistent and hurt him in the election. Print has moderate even age toning that amounts to dark tan background, as well as scattered tiny areas of paper loss mostly relegated to the upper right and left extreme outer edges. VG. Beautifully framed and matted for display. Bill Hoffman Collection.
