Item Description
2.75" wide w/hollow metal back and horizontal bar pin. W&H on curl. Cartoon images of Taft and Diaz w/crossed American and Mexican flags, and text at center "Ciudad Juarez, Mexico & El Paso, Texas, Oct. 1909." Back pin broken off. Faint age spots around extreme edges, as well as faint gray spot in the white field below the two shaking hands. Otherwise light surface wear. VF. Rare. This event was the first meeting between the two country's presidents and the first time a sitting American president visited Mexico. The two countries agreed that the contested Chamizal strip, which connected El Paso, TX to Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, would be considered a neutral zone during the historic meeting. Diaz hoped the event would aid his attempt for a seventh term and Taft aimed to protect American investment in Mexico.
