Item Description
Provenance: Steeped in hobby lore this showstopper button was originally collected by an Indiana nun in the 1920s who amassed a litany of different sized sepia toned 1920 and 1924 campaign buttons w/this 1.5" Davis jugate the top rarity. It became known to the organized hobby when a decedent inherited the collection and sold it to Mark Jacobs, the son of legendary button collector Joe Jacobs, many decades ago. Jacobs sold it privately to an advanced 1924 collector where it has remained until now, making this the first ever public offering of this legendary jugate.

Details: The only example extant. Unlisted in Hake. Reverse has union bug stamp and curl has "U&U" photo copyright. Scattered faint spots in cream background that likely occurred in the photo development process. Extremely Fine. Superlative construction, rich sepia toning w/superb contrast and clarity. Regardless of condition, this is perhaps the penultimate Davis jugate in existence and represents a special opportunity to obtain a 1924 trophy piece. See matching Coolidge in previous lot.

History: Davis was the dark horse "favorite son" candidate of West Virginia entering the Democratic convention and went on to win the nomination on the 103rd ballot, during the longest continuously running political convention in American history. The nature of his nomination combined w/the dismal prospect of the Democratic Party in 1924 led manufacturers to produce far less material for this campaign, making interesting artifacts featuring Davis among the most elusive for any candidate of the 20th century. The rarity of this button cannot be overstated, we note that the 1.25" Cox & Roosevelt jugate that we sold in March of 2022 for a world record $185,850 has a known population of three. This is the only known example of this button known to have survived making this a cornerstone artifact in even the most advanced collections of political campaign material culture.
