Item Description
11x18". Cotton stars and bars annotated in center white stripe "Nate Campbell 5th Regiment, Rebels from Winchester June 11 '62". Entirely hand sewn, raw edge hoist end, two-pieced bottom stripe and uneven join at center point. Canton feature ten stars arranged in a wreath pattern around a center star with one missing star, though thread remains, possibly removed as a momento. Fabric has scattered staining, holes and discoloration. Strong color and notation make this an impressive artifact. Our research couldn't turn up much on Nate Campbell but did find several Campbells in the 5th including a diary, held by the Gilder Lehrman Institute, by James M. Campbell chronicling the units action in 1861 including the Battle of Manassas and Gen. Jackson's farewell speech.
