Item Description
5.25x7.75". 15 pages. Published in 1935 by the International Labor Defense (ILD), a legal advocacy group linked to the Communist Party (CPUSA). Herndon joined the Communist Party in 1930, and in 1932 was arrested and imprisoned on charges of insurrection. His possession of Communist literature was enough for an all-white jury to convict and sentence him to a 20-year sentence of hard labor. He was ultimately released in 1935, and in 1937 the insurrection law in Georgia that got him imprisoned was declared unconstitutional. The pamphlet outlines the cruel conditions of Herndon's imprisonment and calls for abolition of the "Barbarous Chain-Gang System". Has some age toning along top edge, as well as traces of soil in bottom right corner. Scattered creases and moderate surface wear. VF. Scarce.
