Item Description
8x11" handbill asking its readers to attend a mass funeral for Rhoda Simmons, a victim of "Starvation, Exploitation, And Wage Slavery." The funeral was organized by the "Abe Gray Branch Of The League Of Struggle For Negro Rights And The North Side Unemployed Councils." The League of Struggle for Negro Rights was a Communist Party front group founded in 1930. Langston Hughes became its leader in 1934 two years after this flyer was produced for a 1932 demonstration. While not much is known about the mass funeral of "Comrade Mrs. Rhoda Simmons" on January 30, 1932, some details regarding the demonstration at Union Park in Chicago were reported by the Daily Worker, a local Communist daily. According to the article, thousands of workers had been enlisted and were planning to demonstrate in support of the Workers' Unemployment Insurance Bill on February 4th, National Unemployment Insurance Day. Their efforts were meant to aid in the fight against the "Hoover-Cermak Starvation Program" as well as force the various bosses in the area to "provide human living conditions for the unemployed." Handbill has some edge wear, a tiny 1/16" area of paper loss along left edge at 9 o'clock, and some age toning down the middle. A vertical and a horizontal fold. VF. A rare Communist and Civil Rights piece.
