Item Description
1.25" w/"New York 4" union bug on curl at 6 o'clock. This button is in reference to the suspension of seven NYU students who circulated a petition condemning the Jim Crow policy of the university. Their suspensions were upheld, as they were accused of "circulating demonstrable falsehoods" and charged w/being "Communistic." According to the Central New Jersey Homes News (New Brunswick, NJ) in its March 17, 1941 issue, 10 spectators at the hearing wore these buttons in support of those suspended. Button has the faintest toning just right of the "7" that is barely seen, otherwise only minor surface wear. Exc. Rare and interesting civil rights item.
