Item Description
34x43" hand painted cotton banner. Reverse has 1.5" areas of fabric overlap that are tautly mounted to sturdy white matte board with fabric on front, encompasing design, remaining un-affixed to backing. Headline text at top "Bryan And Sewall" with hand painted adornments above an eagle, wings spread, perched on a loosely furled 13 star American flag. New York Gubernatorial candidates listed below. Populist Free Silver Democrat Wilbur F. Porter was initially nominated for Lt. Gov. at the state's convention but when John Boyd Thatcher, a gold Democrat, declined the nomination Porter was elevated on the ticket. With fellow Free Silver Dem. Frederick C. Schraub as Lt. Gov., Porter was defeated by Republicans Frank S. Black and Timothy Woodruff. Two tiny holes at center top and bottom likely from original mounting. Otherwise expected wrinkling and moderate age toning. Fine. Outstanding shading and attention to detail in depicting the eagles' feathers combined with vivid coloration make this a masterpiece of political campaign Americana and easily the finest display artifact we have encountered for the 1896 Democratic ticket. A special opportunity to obtain a prized banner.
