Item Description
3.25x7.75". Ballot featuring portrait of Lincoln below an eagle and by two draped American flags. At the top of the ballot, text reads "Dick, Hold Fast, And See The Salvation Of God." Also running on the Massachusetts ballot was John A. Andrew for Governor. Prior to his election, he provided legal counsel for John Brown after the Harper's Ferry Raid in 1859 and Andrew was viewed as a radical abolitionist. He won his gubernatorial election in 1860, and was a leading force in the efforts of enlisting African Americans into the Union Army during the Civil War. Ballot has two horizontal folds, one about one third of the way up, and another two thirds up the ballot. Otherwise only light handling and edge wear. VF. See corresponding 1864 ballot as lot #57.
