Item Description
6x10" on thin paper. Eagle and wreath seal reads "Union And Liberty" signifying the Union of the Republicans w/the War Democrats on a Union Ticket (ie: Lincoln and Johnson). Gov. Andrew began his career in politics as a radical abolitionist, providing legal support for John Brown after the raid on Harper's Ferry. He was critical of Lincoln after the Emancipation Proclamation, arguing it didn't go far enough. However, by the end of the war, Andrew began to shift to a more conservative and moderate position on slavery and reconstruction, favoring Johnson's less radical approach in bringing the Southern states back into the Union. He did not seek reelection in 1865. Ballot has scattered creases around the edge and a three horizontal creases, as well as a light brown stain in the white field in the upper left side. Fine. See corresponding 1860 ballot as lot #35.
