Item Description
17-1/8x22-1/8" glossy paper poster has caricatured images of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Hideki Tojo, who each wear Nazi swastika armband and discuss venereal diseases and the ease w/which American soldier could catch them. Syphilis, Chancroid and Gonorrhea are mentioned along w/images of the diseases and poster notes "Prophylaxis Prevents Disease" text. During World War II, the medical corps had a prophylaxis kit that would sometimes be issued to soldiers going into town. Upon the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939, Arthur Szyk began producing anti-axis political art, creating numerous covers for Collier's magazine. His efforts didn't go unnoticed as Hitler put a price tag on Szyk's head. The American press called Szyk a "One-Man Army Against Fascism." ©1943 John Wyeth & Brother, Inc. Poster shows moderate handling wear w/creases and 1" and 1.5" tears at top left corner w/tape repairs on back. Two additional tape repairs on back to top margin. Fine overall. Rare and desirable World War II poster. Mike Nichols Collection.
