Item Description
1.25" button has three condition issues but still displays quite nicely. The celluloid covering has many  short and long craze lines but mainly noticeable when viewed closely in reflected light. In addition, bottom edge has dark streak of staining 1" long. The reverse metal cover has heavy oxidation although metal remains intact and the horizontal bar pin remains functional. A pair of Cuban flags flank the oval portraits of the "Campeon" with his name "Kid Chocolate" below. Opposite him is "Manager" with name below "Luis F. Gutierrez." Top of button with exclamation point accents reads "Bienvendios." Still Good and w/full gloss. Early in his career, Kid Chocolate sparred with Benny Leonard and Jack Johnson. His professional career began Dec. 1927 in Havana and in 1928 he came to the United States. During the 1930s he held the world lightweight title. This rare only known example button perhaps originated in Cuba and went into the collection of Richard Merkin, artist and early major collector of Cuban and Negro League baseball items, then via Hake's Auction into the Paul Muchinsky Collection.
