Item Description
1.5" w/tin covered back and fixed horizontal bar pin, plus stamped at center is "Parisian/Novelty Co./Chicago" making this among the very earliest dated buttons by this eventual major advertising specialty company. As made and in certain reflected light, the front surface (not extending on the curl) transparent cello gloss has tiny ripple-like and brush stroke-like lines. Real photo of farmer w/big pitchfork w/long tines posing for camera in his overalls and wide brim straw hat. American  farmers as a labor group and third party force in politicals began in the 1880s on a platform of better crop prices and all around "square" deal for farmers which led to the Populist Party and significant following in 1892 and 1896. Although lasting into early 20th century, this 1900 convention (their 18th) was a last big hurrah of sorts. Totally clean, glossy and NM as made. One known to us. Rare. This is the photo example used for Button Power: 125 Years of Saying it With Buttons by Christen Carter and Ted Hake. Comes w/Hake's COA.
