Item Description
3.25" dia. by .75" deep paper mache box c. 1836-1840. Beautiful N. Mint appearance, but with small area of professional restoration on far left of lid. Restored area includes the far left corner of his coat shoulder to a depth of .5" at top tapering down to only 1/8" below. There is also restoration to the left blank bkg. area above the shoulder well away from the image but up to the "M" of his name and the first five letters are restored. Restored area a near perfect tonal match but just a tiny bit more glossy in certain light angles. Underside of lid near rim has slight convex area so lid will fit snuggly on base, but should not be pressed down fully to prevent potential crack. Lid can be seated so only a 1/16" gap separates top and bottom around side edge. These lids often have extensive visible surface crazing but on this craze lines are barely showing in certain light angles except for 1/16" tiny line on his jaw edge. The Hake Book III example, which shows wear much more than this example, guides at $3,500 in 2004 Revised Prices. Consignor placed extremely reasonable opening bid.
