Item Description
7x8.5" campaign diary of Robert Diefenbach, Deputy Press Secretary to Vice President Spiro Agnew w/entries starting 9/19 and spanning the campaign through 11/6. Each page is a slice of life from the campaign trail covering the ins and outs of travel, notable events and behind the scenes happenings. As an example, the entry from the campaigns 11/3 events in "Denver- Dallas, Texas" reads in part "Arrived About 11:20AM MST. RCD flew in engineer's seat. Motorcade downtown to Centre Theatre. Some -'s (negatives/protestors) but well contained. Several John Q's Grab McGovern Signs Away" and upon arrival in Dallas continues "Police security very tight. 3400 people at $50 a head. Good drill Lionel Hampton, John Wayne. Very well escorted motorcade back to airport." Also included is a collection of 11 hotel keys collected by Diefenbach used throughout the campaign. The keys were taken by members of the press and Agnew's staff and taped up to luggage racks during flights. As the campaign continued the number of keys grew and became known as a "Turbulence Meter" by those in the traveling press. A unique collection capturing the whirlwind reality of national political campaigning.
