Item Description
2-5/8x3.75". The 1954 Red Heart set was produced by the Morrell Company and issued regionally with Red Heart brand dog food. The set consists of 33 cards, each with one of three different, evenly distributed, brightly colored backgrounds: 11 red, 11 blue and 11 green. A bust portrait of a broadly smiling player adorned the front of each card, placed against the solid backdrop. The clean design features the ballplayer's name within an elongated diamond near the bottom of each item, just above the team name printed along the bottom white border. The reverse carries a biography, statistics, and the Red Heart logo. The set features most of the stars and future Hall of Famers of the time, of which Stan Musial is the most difficult piece in the set, as his appearance was not only a short print, but also his only 1954 issue as he was absent from both the Bowman and Topps sets that year.
Don Richard Ashburn, also known by the nicknames, "Putt-Putt", "The Tilden Flash", and "Whitey", was an American center fielder in Major League Baseball. From his youth on a farm, he grew up to become a professional outfielder and veteran broadcaster for the Philadelphia Phillies and one of the most beloved sports figures in Philadelphia history. Some of his career highlights include being a six time All-Star and three time batting champion. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995.
