Item Description
1" w/St. Louis Button Co. back paper. Rankin was a suffrage activist, supporter of civil rights and pacifist. Palm card has only light surface wear and handling. Exc. Cello has trivial wear in reflected light. NM. Montana voters first sent Rankin to Congress in 1916 making her the first woman elected to the body. Her pacifist views led her to vote against US entry into WWI costing her a chance at re-election. She ran again in 1940 and found herself in the same situation, voting against entry into WWII after the attack on Pearl Harbor, again ending her chance at re-election. She was the singular vote in Congress against a declaration of war. In 1968 the still active Rankin led 5,000 women on a march against the Vietnam War in Washington DC.
