Item Description
1" w/ St. Louis Button Co. back paper. While most of organized labor supported FDR, the CIO, under the leadership of John L. Lewis, endorsed Wendell Willkie. In a speech to his union prior to the election, Lewis stated that if FDR was re-elected, he would consider it a vote of no-confidence for his own leadership of the CIO, and holding true to his word, Lewis resigned after Roosevelt's re-election. Tiny faint gray spot under the "I" in "CIO". Otherwise only minor wear. Still Exc. An unusual piece of political and labor history highlighting the tension between Lewis and Roosevelt during this period.
