Item Description
8" long. Silk. Front features portrait of Washington w/ text at top reading "Native American". Text on border of portrait read "Beware of Foreign Influence-Republican Association of North Mulberry Ward". At the bottom is text reading "21 Years". On reverse is stamp reading "Mastai Collection". The North Mulberry Ward was in Philadelphia, and this ribbon was promoting the American Republican Party (Native American) ticket. 21 years is a reference to the 21-year naturalization policy proposed by the party and subsequent nativist parties in which immigrants must wait 21 years before being granted full citizenship and voting rights. The rationale was that native-born Americans had to be 21 to vote, so immigrants should have to wait the same amount of time before earning the right to vote. A few minor traces of soil and a few pin holes at the top, otherwise only light surface wear and handling. Main images on ribbon are largely free of flaws. VF.
