Item Description
Fractional Currency was introduced by the United States federal government following the outbreak of the Civil War. Due to the effects of the Civil War on the economy, a shortage in coinage occurred. The initial solution was encased postage which then led to the production of fractional notes. These low-denomination banknotes of the United States dollar were in use between 21 August 1862 and 15 February 1876, and issued in denominations of 3, 5, 10, 15, 25, and 50 cents across five issuing periods. This lot contains 13 different examples of the 20 total printed from first issue to fifth issue ranging in condition from Very Fine 25 to About Uncirculated 55. Full list of examples online.
