Item Description
5X7". By the age of 19, Herndon had been run out of Birmingham for organizing labor unions and raised a 1,000 worker-integrated strike in Atlanta with the Unemployment Council. He was arrested for insurrection, held on Reconstruction era segregation laws and charged w/possession of Communist literature. Herndon was defended by International Labor Defense (Attorney Ben Davis) in Georgia and sentenced to 20 years hard labor. After the Supreme Court overturned the ruling as a violation of free speech, Herndon became a celebrity and Ben Davis went on to Harlem editing The Negro Liberator, a newspaper targeted to Black Communists.
