Item Description
6X9". "Hear That Great Negro American Leader Ben Davis, City Councilman Of New York, Speak At Corinthian Baptist Church". Ben Davis was radicalized by his work as attorney on the Jim Crow Angelo Herndon trial and as a result himself joined the Communist Party. He migrated to Harlem in 1935, edited the Black Liberator and later Daily Worker before being elected to fill Adam Clayton Powell Jr's city council seat in 1943. This flyer likely dates to 1944 and references the Hamtramck Housing Project Fight (Detroit) possibly for the first time. Accompanied by a Michigan CIO Voter Rally page w/cartoon of a sullen worker who did not register. PR w/heavy but consistent toning to thin paper. Signed Hamtramck Vote Mobilization Committee w/union bug. Extremely Fine.
