Item Description
7/8" no maker w/black metal back and stud. The earliest dated celluloid covered lapel stud we know of and likely made by Whitehead & Hoag in Newark. Text reads, "Carnival of Roses/San Jose/May 6-7-8-9- '96". The first Rose Parade took place in the winter (to publicize the charm of the warm climate thus  luring cold weather sufferers to the West), of 1890 in Pasedena. Six years later, it appears this was the first San Jose event which was gigantic and included 15,000 school children in a parade. One known to us. Rare. NM. The earliest dated celluloid pin-back we've documented is from about three weeks later dated May 28-29, 1896 for a medical event in Fort Wayne, IN. We would love to be shown an earlier dated celluloid pin-back, and a patent date wouldn't count. Date must be on paper covered by celluloid and with a pin-back. California Button Collection.
