Item Description
2-3/8" (60mm) each. First in bronze is DeWitt USG-1868-2, also included is a brass copy cast of USG-1868-1. DeWitt's notes on 1868-1 include "In view of the artist's attempt to portray Grant in a semi-facing position the bust did not prove satisfactory and the obverse die was destroyed after a few impressions were struck. This accounts for its extreme rarity." Verso of each has text "I Intend To Fight It Out On The Lines If It Takes All Summer" and at center "Patient Of Toil,/Serene Amidst Alarm,/Inflexible In Faith,/Invincible In Arms." Dies for 1868-2 were produced by Hugues Bovy of Geneva, Switzerland and these medals were for members of the Swiss Republican Club. 1868-2 has only minor wear w/a rich reddish brown patina and sharp details on the high relief bust. Exc. Scarce.
