Item Description
Akin to the holy grail status enjoyed by the likes of Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman and the Honus Wagner T206 baseball card, the Cox/FDR jugate shares the combination of extreme rarity and fascinating back story that will always tantalize collectors.

HISTORY: A lack of enthusiasm haunted the 1920 Democratic ticket. Ohio Gov. James M. Cox become the nominee on the 44th convention ballot and his selection of selection of a then barely known Franklin D. Roosevelt was in part for his famous last name. Roosevelt, then a 38-year-old, had most recently served as Assistant Sec. of the Navy (1913-1919) under Woodrow Wilson. During that time he was defeated in a 1916 Senate primary campaign to be the Democratic nominee from New York. Coupled w/this was the campaign's own issues seen in a letter from a major button manufacturer indicating that as of July 31, 1920, they were still seeking a suitable portrait of FDR to use on buttons. This delay undoubtedly impacted production of jugates for the already lackluster ticket.

HOBBY ICON: The few surviving examples have long been considered likely samples issued by their manufacturers and with no more than three Cox/FDR jugates found together at one time. The lack of examples is especially notable as collectors have been in a dizzying pursuit of these buttons since 1964 when an example changed hands during the first American Political Items Collectors (APIC) convention for a then record sum of over $200, a shocking sum at the time, cementing the Cox/FDR as the hobby's most sought after button.

5/8" w/W&H back paper. Some scattered faint staining, most notably seen on the candidates' foreheads and their collars. Tiny 1/16" surface scratch on Roosevelt's jaw, as well as faint horizontal scratch on the suits of the candidates, just above their names. Amounts to moderate wear seen in reflected light. VF. Near perfect centering and no separations. The staining is most noticeable under magnification w/normal view being unimpeded, but remains an impressive show piece befitting its crown jewel status among collectors. This specimen is a new discovery that is fresh to market. Discovered in Kansas over a decade ago the non-hobbyist finder had the sense to hang on to this diminutive rarity. They recently re-discovered the button and reached out for help making sure it found its way to a good home within the collecting community. We are privileged to be able to bring this button to market adding another layer to the storied jugate and offering an opportunity for another collector to join the fabled club of Cox/FDR owners.
