Item Description
2.25 x 3-7/8" stiff cardboard card has a blank back and originally accompanied the button offered as the previous lot. Typed info as issued includes recipient name "Tom Reekie", his address in Canada, club president's name "Dudley Baker" and issue date of March 17th, 1952. Mantle started his MLB career w/the New York Yankees in 1951 and this card is dated just prior to the start of the 1952 season, which began April 15th. An early and historic piece of Mantle memorabilia. Card has rounded corners as printed. Small stain on bottom margin. Overall still presents very nicely for a Good card, with little taking away from its appearance aside from the stain. The only other example we have ever seen or know of was from the Paul Muchinsky Collection which we sold in our Sept. 2020 auction for $7,463. That did not have any information typed on it, nor was it third party graded. It should be noted that this "1952" card, while not having the visual impact or lore of his '52 Topps issue, is infinitely more rare and should be coveted by any serious baseball collector looking to obtain every Mantle card made. Also see the next lot for Tom Reekie's even rarer Jackie Robinson subscription card.
