Item Description
These are mostly 7/8" to 1" with one at .75" and the final button at 1-3/8". In 1896 two women founded the Massachusetts Audubon Society to protest the slaughter of birds for their plumage. By 1898, there were groups in 15 states and the National Audubon Society was founded in 1905.  There are two buttons known from 1898-99 with Whitehead & Hoag back papers. One shows a thrush while the one in this collection shows a robin. The robin is followed by the thrush used in 1898-99, but here the back paper's earliest use was in 1900. So, the early buttons were used for several years. Buttons 3-4 also have W&H papers used only 1900-1912. #3 is rare. #4 names New Jersey. #5 is smallest in group and has 1930s W&H paper. #6 is another rarity w/paper by Orange Mfg. of Newark. In Row 2, none have back paper and saw use c. 1920s-1930s.  In row 3, all have Bastian paper used 1921-1946. In row 4, all have Offset Gravure paper from late 1940s- early 1950s except the last in the row with Florida eagle is a rarity w/out paper. The three remaining rows are all litho, not cello covered. The first is 1930s w/Green Duck back. All the rest, except final two, say "Printed (or Made) in U.S.A". and all (except first) in rows 5-6 say "Junior Member". These are largely 1950s-1960s. The final two c. 1980s-1990s are member buttons for "National Audubon Society". All are clean. VF to NM. Largest collection known to us.
