Item Description
Clothbound hardcover w/258 pages, this edition on Mary Shelley's masterpiece included eight full-page photograph illustrations from James Whale's 1931 Universal film adaptation of the story. Complete w/dust jacket. Published by Grosset & Dunlap, 1931. Cover has some aging at top/bottom edges and some corner foxing. Front endpaper has .75x.75" area at upper right corner w/insect damage resulting in a few holes at this spot. Pages have aged to cream in color and have some scattered staining, mainly confined to Introduction at beginning of book. Plates showcase scenes from the film, w/first - "The Monster Made By Frankenstein" - featuring Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster. Great double-page spread shows Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) and Fritz (Dwight Frye) in the laboratory, about to bring Frankenstein's creation to life. "The Monster Is Loose!" plate shows Elizabeth (Mae Clarke) collapsed across a bed (an image repeated on the dust jacket). Book is VG/Fine overall. Dust jacket features great Karloff image (in addition to the aforementioned Clarke image) and shows obvious wear w/small tears and scattered edge chips but remains unclipped. Larger 1.5" tear by bottom of spine w/archival tape repair to interior of dust jacket to stabilize another 1.5" spine tear at bottom. Dust jacket is just Good overall. Scarce in any condition, this book remains one of the most sought-after Photoplay editions.
