Item Description
8.5" on thin paper. Brough represented the Unionist Party and found support from both the GOP and War Democrats. The 1863 Ohio gubernatorial race was one of the more fascinating campaigns in American electoral history as Brough's opponent, Copperhead Clement Vallandingham, was arrested and deported to the Confederate States of America, running for the seat in exile.  After his victory Lincoln congratulated him by wire stating "Glory to God in the Highest. Ohio has saved the Nation." Small area of loss in upper left corner, otherwise only light handling. VF.
