Item Description
3/4" brass w/needle post and clutch fastener. Relief design of a baseball w/batter at center swinging and numbers "61/61" noting year and home run record that was being pursued. issued to commemorate the active American League home run race that was going on during the 1961 season as New York Yankees teammates, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were both making an assault on Babe Ruth's all-time single season home run record of 60 set all the way back in 1927. Unfortunately Mantle's chance was cut short by injury during the season's final weeks and he finished at 54 homers. Maris, however, persevered and ultimately eclipsed Ruth's record by hitting his 61st home run on the season's final day. Roger's accomplishment would be noted in the record books with an asterisk next to it as he needed a total of 162 games to accomplish the feat while "The Babe" hit his 60 homers during a 154 game season. Much luster loss but highlights remain. VF. Comes in original plastic case w/foam insert. From the Paul Muchinsky Collection and he notes this is from the estate of Balfour artist and Executive Vice President Norman Shorrock. A rarely seen relic from one of baseball's most storied events.
