Item Description
1-1/8" litho w/W.M. Young Regalia Co. back paper. Designed as a basketball and picturing the game's creator "Dr. J.A. Naismith" along w/founding date of 1891 and the "Basketball Golden Jubilee" date of 1941. © Naismith Memorial Committee. Unusual for a litho button to have a back paper and these easily come loose, so rare to find it still intact on this button. Some small tears and wear but present. Front has some hairline scratches mostly only seen when viewed closely. Glossy, VF.  Historic basketball button.

James Naismith (1851-1939) is best known as the inventory of basketball. After moving to the United States in 1890, he wrote the original basketball rule book in 1891 and founded the University of Kansas basketball program in 1898. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, is named in his honor, and he was an inaugural inductee in 1959.
